14 year-old aces the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) diploma in just 10 months
14-year old Brampton boy shows exceptional aptitude and attitude, aces the Royal Conservatory’s highest level piano exam after studying for only 10 months.
Those who can play the piano will tell you that its not the same playing on a digital keyboard, as opposed to playing on a good digital piano with real piano like keys.
That what happened to Brampton teen Bradley Snel, when he was gifted a digital piano by his parents.
“Three years ago, my grandmother gifted me a digital keyboard for Christmas which I taught myself to play. Then my parents got me an upright piano. The depth of the keys in the upright piano is very different from the digital one. Once I started, I just wanted to keep going”.
Snel loved the digital piano so much that he would practice on the piano for hours – he diligently practiced for six hours or more everyday.
As a result, Snel was able to ace the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) diploma in just 10 months; Most students take around 2.5 to 3 years to achieve this feat.
The teen is being tutored by Jarred Dunn – a Juilliard-trained pianist, working as a chamber musician/soloist – who has been teaching Snel for the past two years. Dunn imparts piano lessons (via Skype) to Bradley from his home in Rome.
Dunn, said he first heard Snel play a Mozart sonata that he had self-taught himself. That coupled with the youngster’s earnestness to learning music impressed him.
“Before our lessons (via Skype) Bradley works out his plan for a piece, scrupulously analyzing it interpretively and technically. His giftedness is an abnormality among preteens and it signalled to me that he probably had other capabilities that were uncommon. These include his tenacity for reading books of ambitious depth and learning multiple languages, as well as taking demanding music and school courses simultaneously.”
With Snel, Dunn uses the Taubman Approach (helps pianists hone their technique without causing injuries or strain), which he learned from the late Dorothy Taubman, a famed American teacher.

Lydian Nadhaswaram from Chennai was on The Ellen Show and there he said that he could play two different songs on two different pianos at the same time. So a mission impossible on one, and a harry potter on the other, both have different timing.
Now that’s interesting and a bit curious to see how he does that. Can’t find any video.
