A new company called Future Piano is looking to solve the problems associated with a grand piano (as we know it) by introducing a standing grand piano.
The issues with owning a grand piano is common knowledge – it takes up a lot of space and tends to be very heavy, thanks to the cast-iron frame and huge amounts of wood. Future Piano, a company started by renowned contemporary pianist, Sarah Nicolls, tries to answer these challenges through their standing grand piano.
The company wants to address the issue of size, weight and accessibility, both physically and culturally, trough their uniquely designed standing grand piano in which the main body is flipped vertically which allows for far easier access to the strings (for tuning, maintenance).
They have also tried to make the piano much lighter by using carbon fibre (very light material). In fact, the hope is that just two people will be able to carry the Standing Grand up a flight of stairs.
The company have launched a Kickstarter campaign with the intention of raising a target of £40,000. If you want to get involved, then head over to the Kickstarter page and more info can be found on the Future Piano website.
Well, not sure why they just cannot take the upright piano design and modify it rather than place the strings higher up.
