Schubert: Biography
Austrian composer Franz Peter Schubert (January 31, 1797 – November 19, 1828) was born in Vienna, Austria. In his career, Schubert wrote hundreds of lieders, nine symphonies (including the famous “Unfinished Symphony”), operas, and several chamber and solo piano music.
Even though Schubert was very talented, his music received limited appreciation. While he did make money from published works and occasionally gave private musical instruction, most of the time, he had to rely on his friends and family for support.
Schubert died at a very young age of 31 from prolonged illness.
Even though Schubert is regarded as one of the greatest composers in Western music, the fact is that people started appreciating Schubert’s work decades after his death. Great Composers like Franz Liszt, Robert Schumann and Felix Mendelssohn promoted his works in the 19th century.
Schubert is particularly known for his melodic writing.
