Piano Chair, an alternative to keyboard benches & stools. If a bench or a stool is not what you prefer, you can use a piano chair for that extra support to your back and body while playing.
These chairs look like regular chairs and come with a backrest/support, and that is its biggest advantage. So if you have a back problem or recently had a back surgery, you must consider these; players love the fact that they can play the piano with their back supported. While the inexpensive and portable models are more like thrones with backrest, the proper piano chairs look elegant (will complement elegant looking uprights or grands), have solid construction and are height adjustable.
Piano Chair vs Piano Bench
Here are the basic differences between a piano bench and a piano chair:
- A piano bench does not come with a back rest, but a piano chair does come with one.
- A piano bench may have storage space (for books, sheets, pencils) but a piano chair usually doesn’t come with storage space
- Both, bench as well as chair, have height adjusting mechanism
- A piano chair is generally heavier than a piano bench because of the backrest.

Piano Chair: Buying Guide
Compared to the budget piano/keyboard benches, piano chairs are usually a bit expensive and some of them are used in professional music studios. The better ones are of-course sturdily built and can even last for a lifetime. Even Jansen (popular brand that makes benches/stools) used to offer a piano chair but now have discontinued their piano chair.
Some of these can also be adjusted for the height. An adjustable piano chair with backrest is ideal for playing piano, reading, writing, eating, and you can also use it for other activities.
A Piano chair can be quickly & easily adjusted, similar to most adjustable studio piano benches. Most of these can be adjusted from the height of 17″ to 22″ with multiple positions in between. As an additional safety measure, a latch can be pushed to lock in the position.
Piano chairs are ergonomically designed, allow height-adjustment, provide good back-rest. Piano chairs usually don’t come with armrests.
You get piano chairs with padded tops or with plain top. Usually these are made of solid hard wood with gloss finish, and are available in ebony (black), walnut (brown) or mahogany (reddish) color.
There are many who find these piano chairs better compared to a booster seat and these could also be used around the dining table, in case you have more guests at home.
You may even use your regular chair, in case if you don’t have access to one of these. Just make sure you don’t slouch and maintain good posture and position while playing. You may even consider using a keyboard/drum throne that comes with a backrest, if that’s what you’re looking for.
