All about the Pentatonic scale (the Asian scale) and how to play it on the piano.
Another scale for players who are no longer beginners! It does not mean beginners cannot play it. In fact, this scale is very easy to play, just 5 notes. The only reason I said it is not for beginners is because beginners normally start with the major/minor scales. By the time they are comfortable playing those scales, they are no longer beginners. It is then easy for them to understand how scales are built and they can quickly grasp other scales.
Structure of a Pentatonic scale
This scale has five notes and that is the reason it is referred to as pentatonic. Like others, even this scale can be played in 12 different keys.
In the C key, the scale would contain the following notes.
C D F G A C
Asian music
Not many people would know about it but this scale is also used in Indian as well as Oriental music. So anybody who wants to do some fusion music can base his compositions on this scale. Lot of modern music is based on this scale. You will also find lots of songs, labeled as World Music, that are based on this scale.
End of another lesson! You should be able to compose fusion music now 🙂 Just create a melody based on this scale and add some rocking rhythm to it.
