Here’s a quick overview of the music instruments from the ‘Strings’ family of instruments.
Largest instrument in the ‘string’ family of instruments
The strings are the largest family of instruments in the orchestra. These instruments come in four sizes: the violin is the smallest, followed by the viola & cello. The biggest of them all is the double bass (also sometimes known as the contrabass).
How do these instruments produce sound?
The wooden bodies (made from different kinds of wood) of the string instruments are hollow from inside and allow the sound to vibrate within them. But the part of the instrument that makes the sound is the strings, which are made of nylon, steel or sometimes gut.
The piccolo is the smallest and highest (pitched) instrument in the orchestra. It plays one octave higher than the flute. There is also an alto flute which sounds a fifth lower than the ordinary flute. Flutes are mostly made of metal nowadays, though you do get flutes that are made of wood.
