Modular Synthesizers: Guide
What is a Modular Synthesizer
Lets start with Modular Synth Basics. As opposed to a regular synthesizer, where all the sections are available on the control panel and hard-wired, a modular synthesizer consists of separate specialized modules (not hardwired together) but are connected together with patch cables to create a patch. Modular synthesizers exist in both physical and virtual forms.
While regular synthesizers are easier to use and more portable, modular synths are used by experienced musicians who want more control over the tone that is generated.

What is Eurorack Modular
Eurorack is a modular synthesizer format, it means any module in Eurorack format can be placed into a Eurorack case and it should work with other modules. You get Eurorack modular synths such as Amplifier, mixer, Oscillator, envelope, filter etc..
What music producers like the most about Eurorack is that it allows you to configure a synthesizer with no set signal flow, this allows you to gain the most from the individual modular components.
Basic components needed for Eurorack modular:
- Case or Rack: Heart of any modular synth
- Power Supplies: In addition to standard 12v power, you may need 5v power as well (depending on the digital module), so make sure that your power supply can handle it.
- Cables: Basic cables needed are standard 3.5mm or 1/8th inch mono audio cables
- Control: you need modules that will control your synth (Modular synths are controlled by sending Voltage referred to as CV – control Voltage)
- Modules: Individual building blocks of your modular synth

MiniMo Synth: Cheap modular synth perfect for beginners
MiniMo is an inexpensive modular synth, perfect for beginners.
The modules are identical but each unit can be programmed differently to create oscillators, filters or sequencers. The modules can also be linked together to create your own miniature modular rig.
And the price? Its available under $50 (if you are good at soldering iron, you can even buy a kit version for cheaper).
BEHRINGER to enter Eurorack module market
BEHRINGER plans to enter the Eurorack module market. Like its other offerings, BEHRINGER intends to launch modules that are affordable.
What Uli Behringer Said In The Gearslutz Forum?
As you are aware, many of our synthesizers such as Model D, Neutron, Pro-1 etc. have been designed to be used as standalone instruments but also to fit the hugely popular Eurorack format. Many of you have now requested for us to build individual Eurorack modules, powered Eurorack cases and especially bring back some of the legacy modular systems. At the same time we also thought about inviting all designers and engineers among you to participate in this initiative. The goal would be to build a wide range of modules and – as usual – at very affordable prices (target prices US$ 49-99) which would allow us to open this market and get as many people as possible into synths and making music.

Behringer Model D + Waldorf KB37 – Eurorack Modular
This ProckGnosis video combines a Behringer Model D synthesizer and a Waldorf KB37 keyboard case (first step working with eurorack modular and to save cost). Eurorack can be so much fun, but it can also burn a big hole in your pocket.
Live Modular Synth Dub Jam Session (video)
Luke Killen uploaded a video of his live modular synth dub jam session; he’s building a live set for his upcoming gig.
Technical Details of the setup:
The set consists of:
- Eurorack modular synthesizer
- Clavia G2 modular synthesizer
- Eventide Space
- Boss Re20, run through a small Mackie mixer.
- Everything is sequenced using the Sequentix Cirklon sequencer.
Almost everything is synthesized in real-time using the eurorack modular or Clavia G2 modular.
The vocal sample is played back by a eurorack module called ‘radio music’ (a sample player).
Bass drum is either Basimilus Iteratus eurorack or a Clavia G2
Vince Clarke’s Introduction To The Buchla Modular Synthesizer
Synth pop pioneer Vince Clarke has a massive synth collection – but he’s new to Buchla synthesizers. In this video, I’m talking to Reed Hays, a master of the mighty Buchla Modular Synthesizer,” says Clarke.
