We have reviewed several keyboard categories on our site; this one is for children. Even though you can learn to play the keyboards using these, the intention is to let kids have fun with electronic keyboard instruments, explore the various sounds and features.

As parents, in case you’re wondering which toy to buy next, this is probably something that you should consider.

These are also useful for music educators; buy a few of these for your studio and use it for group lessons (make sure you have a few 61 and 88 key keyboards as well).

However, these are perfect for kids and children. You can use these for some quality family time and play your kids favorite songs (in case you don’t know how to play yet, just select one of the built-in rhythms and pretend to play on top of it, while you all sing the song).

Yamaha PSS-F30 Mini-key Portable Keyboard

Yamaha has only recently started making mini-sized keys. The Yamaha PSS-F30 comes with 37 mini-sized keys, 120 voices and 114 styles, and 30 built-in songs.

This keyboard comes with a Headphone jack, and I am really not sure if its a good thing for kids, as they really should not use headphones to play keyboards.

And if this model is designed for adults, they are going to find the number of keys limiting, especially you play it using Styles/Accompaniment as half of the keys are used for chords.

However, for kids, the keyboard has plenty of exciting features, and its a good first keyboard to start playing keyboards.

Yamaha Pianicas (Melodicas)

This is basically a wind instrument but uses a keyboard to play the notes. Its easy to carry and play. Its an acoustic instrument (not electronic). Melodicas are quite popular in schools; great for teaching music to small children. Read more

Full sized Keyboards Are Affordable too

While these keyboards are great for kids, if you have a grown up kid (8+ years), you could even buy a keyboard with 61 full sized keys.

the good thing about electronic keyboards is that they most of them are affordably priced, and there are several good brands out there. You could still find a keyboard come with 61 full sized keys for under 100 bunks, and kids love to play on bigger keyboards.

Learning to Play the Keyboards/Piano

Wile these are great for introducing kids to music and for learning to play simple songs, these are not designed for serious learning.

So if your child already knows the basics of keyboards, which she probably learnt on a mini keyboard, then it would make sense to get her a keyboard with touch-sensitive keys.

The keyboards that we have reviewed here do not come with touch sensitive keys, and as your ears become better you will realize that the sounds and speakers are of average quality, if you compare it with some of the better keyboards out there.

That is when you should ideally consider getting a good 61-Key keyboard for your child, especially those who already know a bit about music.
