Introduction
One of the primary requirements of a music keyboard is that it needs to be powered up, since these are electrical/electronic instruments. Electronic keyboards gives you all the sounds, styles, effects – everything that you need for a one man orchestra or to come up with your own song from scratch, but the assumption is that your keyboard is powered all the time.
The two most common methods to power up your keyboard is to use a power adapter or use batteries (in case of inexpensive models). And since these are electronic instruments, you need to be aware of what specification adapter/battery to use so that you don’t damage your keyboard.

DC-In Jack on Yamaha Portatone Keyboards
Once you have your new music Keyboard, it’s important that you check out the user manual for topics on Installation and Connections, so that you accidentally do not cause any harm to your piano keyboard.
Your piano Keyboard will have a Power Jack, known as the DC-In Jack. One end of your power adapter will go to the wall unit and the other in side the DC-In Jack.
Once you make the connection, switch on the power supply and press the Power button that is available on the keyboard. An indicator on the Your Yamaha electronic keyboard will glow which indicates that you are ready to use the keyboard.
If you are going to use batteries, then the keyboard will power up only when the right number of batteries are used and that too when they all point in the correct direction.
Why Keyboard Power Adapters / Power Supply?
A keyboard power adapter is a very important accessory that comes along with your musical instrument. It is important… because it connects your electronic keyboard to the main power supply!
The concern here is not that you would get an electric shock. I think all the keyboard power adapters would take that basic safety precaution. Another concern is that it may not be efficient in handling the voltage fluctuations in the power supply, which in turn could damage your electronic keyboard.
Genuine keyboard adapters on the other hand are designed to handle these fluctuations (we will talk about exceptions and alternatives further down), besides efficiently using electricity.
In case, you ever misplace your keyboard power adapter, don’t be tempted to buy any other adapter!
Always go in for a genuine, branded keyboard power adapter!
Precautions
Brands such as Yamaha and Casio recommend only genuine power adapters for their keyboards, so as far as possible use products from the same brand to power your digital keyboard. It’s best is to buy a digital keyboard or piano that comes bundles with a compatible power adapter.
If you intend to use batteries, check the user manual as to what battery size and how many should be used. This is dependent on the model of the Yamaha portable keyboard.
If you use batteries, it’s always advisable to remove them when not in use. If left inside the electronic keyboard for several days, the batteries could leak which could in turn damage your Yamaha keyboard.
In general, all specifications regarding the voltage requirements and the battery sizes will be provided in the user manual. You will also find the section on Safety Precautions extremely useful for the safety of your Yamaha keyboard. After all these are electronic items which could easily be damaged if there is considerable change in the power supply.
Finding the Right Keyboard Power Adapter
But it may not always be possible to get the original power adaptar for your music keyboard. It could be out of stock or it could have become obsolete.
In that what are your options? Should get a universal power adapter or a 12v dc power supply or maybe a 5v power supply or anything else?
In such instances, you may do the following.
Find the voltage and the milliamp rating required for your keyboard. This is usually mentioned at on the back or the underside of your music keyboard.
For example, you may see something like ‘9V’ for the voltage rating and ‘900mA’ for the milliamp rating.
So even if you have to buy a different brand of adapter, these are the two numbers that you need to look for in the new power adapter.
With those two numbers, you can find the exact power adapter you need.

Keyboard Adapters
Since we are taking about electronic items here, and because the cost of the digital piano or recording equipment in question could vary a lot, there are several options / combinations that one may consider.
To begin with, if you are just looking for a power adapter for your electronic keyboard, depending on the brand you may consider one of the following:
Casio power supply and adapters…
Yamaha power supply & adapter…
Other power supply & adapters…
Surge Protector, Power Adapter, Cords, Batteries for Digital Pianos Keyboards…
Surge Protectors
Now if you want a multiple slots to plug in multiple electronic devices, say your electronic keyboard, your computer, your printer, and may be your home hi-fi system as well, then you may go in for a multi-outlet surge protector.
Though most of them are known as surge protector, there are varied experiences from users under extreme voltage fluctuations (where these are actually supposed to work). In most inexpensive surge protectors, over a period of time the internal components wear out and are not really effective guarding against spikes.
Nevertheless, if you don’t have cases of power fluctuations where you live and are looking for a multi-outlet power supply, a good budget surge protector will suffice.
For those of you who experience power fluctuations in our area and have a rather expensive digital piano keyboard, you may consider surge protectors that come with the PowerBlocker automatic shutdown technology. Basically it disconnects the line when a surge is detected, and that way it also ensures a longer life for its components. So you may go in for a surge protector with powerblocker.
UPS System
Do you experience more voltage fluctuations, blackouts, brownouts, in your area?
Do you have an expensive digital piano or music workstation? Do you do recording work as well at home and would prefer to have some time to save your stuff in case of an emergency? Maybe you should get a UPS.
A small UPS (750 VA) should be sufficient for your setup. You may go in for a higher rating UPS if you desire so.

Power supply for digital keyboards, synths and digital pianos: FAQs
Hi, I have a Technics Digital Ensemble Piano Model SX-PR350, and recently it stopped playing. I brought it to a local repair shop. He fixed it. He said the problem was that I should have protected it from spikes/surges in the electricity supply. Is there one I can buy online at reasonable cost?
I’ve just checked the voltage at the back of the Ensemble and it reads: 240V.
Furthermore, the guy in the shop mixed up some power leads and I’m convinced he has given me a different one. It has a 3amp fuse in it – is this ok?

Usually you will find the power ratings mentioned near the slot where the power adapter connects. The most common numbers are of voltage rating and milliamp rating. For example, there should be something like 9V (for the voltage rating) and say 850mA (for the milliamp rating).
The voltage supply of 240V relates to the power supply in some countries. In Europe it is 220 to 240 V whereas in America and certain other countries it is 110-120 V. Certain adapters and surge protectors work are universal but most work with either 240 or 110V.

Do you have a home insurance which covers most of your electronic goods? If yes, maybe you can add your digital piano to that list. I’m not sure how good are these surge protection equipment. Most of these seem to play on your fear. I am not sure about power surge protectors…a UPS could be a better alternative but more expensive and not sure if you really need it. – Peter

I have a Technics KN 700 Piano I bought in the 80’s. It’s like brand new. I want the power cord. It’s by it self and no universal or other power cord will fit. I’m sick and tired of buying batteries to play it. It cost me quite of bit of money when I bought it and I’m really not interested in buying another one. it’s very versatile and I love playing it. Any help will be appreciated. – Rich A
We had a lightning strike that knocked out two tv’s, my sewer system computer controller, my A/C (locked on 3 heat strips) two direct tv boxes, all internal phone lines and several phones, and my Yamaha dgx 530 88-key keyboard. I had left my Yamaha dgx 530 88 keyboard plugged in one night and at midnight a storm came thru and blew ever thing. However my keyboard still lights up but no sound. My manual is missing so I was afraid to open it up since I did not my manual or knew what screws to remove. (I am an extra class amateur radio operator and have built a lot of radios and electronic equipment so I feel confident to check and replace resistors, diodes etc. Was wondering how to get another manual or what to do. I went on line and can only find how to buy one but can’t find how to order a manual. – John Collier
I have a Technics KN701 Keyboard and unfortunately I have broken the power adaptor of my keyboard. I would like to know if it is possible to buy a new power adapter for my Technics KN701 on this site. Alternately, can you please let me know where can I get more information on where to buy the adaptor AC SY AD6B Ac 230V 50/60hz (and its price as well) – Claudio Macchi
For my Technics Keyboard, I successfully use the power adaptor from a Canon Bubblejet printer – the old single-sheet one. It works for me. – Ian
In case you are not able to find one, here is what you can do. Wherever the power jack is located on your piano, it will also mention the power rating of the adapter that the digital piano is expecting. It will say a voltage rating of something like ’12V’ and it will also have the milliamp rating in mA. Just buy any power adapter with those two numbers (the voltage rating is more important). The brand actually doesn’t matter though the manufacturer may make you believe so. – Suresh
