Lot of Music teachers around the world have started using the internet to impart music lessons. Here we take a look at the technical aspect of setting up your music teaching studio – the computer and the internet connection.
Computer or a Laptop
You will need a computer/laptop as part of your setup. It doesn’t have to be of the highest configuration; you will only be using the Webcam, Mic and Skype to interact with the students, and my be a music teaching software.
However, in the future, if you intend to use more music software, notation software, or intend to teach the basics of music production, it will be better to get a computer with decent configuration (not one with the lowest specs).
- Make sure you get a laptop with bigger screen size so that you can clearly see your students.
- In case you’re buying a new one, make sue you get one with a built-in webcam (digital camera); you can even buy it separately.
- Most computers come with built-in mic, but you should consider getting a separate microphone that you can place alongside the computer, on the desk; makes it easier to talk to the students.
Internet Connection
This is the more obvious part. You will need an internet connection so that you can communicate with the students across locations (even countries).
The user experience (in this case, for the student) will depend on several things, and one of them is the internet speed. Its normally not an issue in developed countries, but in other countries internet speeds can be bit slower.
You can test your internet speed at Speedtest.net to see how fast your internet connection is. If its a bottleneck, you may have to upgrade to a faster connection.
Faster internet speeds means the video quality (for both you and your students) will be better.
Make sure you have internet connection of at least 0.5 MB upload and 1 MB download speed, for a better user experience.
