Find a large selection and great deals on baby grand pianos. Depending on the length of the piano, a piano may be referred to as a baby grand piano, but in no way it means that it has reduced features or quality of sound. Steinway Pianos, Baldwin, Yamaha Pianos, Kawai and more.
Difference Between Grand Piano and Baby Grand Piano
The most obvious difference between a traditional grand piano and a baby grand piano is in their sizes. The baby grand piano is comparatively smaller in size (not the number of keys or the key sizes, but the section that produces the sound).
Its believed that the name “baby grand” was coined by the British firm Challen, who made by far the greatest number of small grand pianos in the UK in the 1920s and 30s, starting from 4ft 3in long by 4ft 4in across the keyboard.
Some piano experts say that it’s better to buy a tall upright than a small grand, because of the string length. However, the action on a grand piano is generally better than an upright, as uprights “throw” the hammer at the string, whereas grands “lift” the hammer towards it.
Great Sound & Great Appearance
While a full blown grand piano may not be practical in most homes, a baby grand piano can definitely be accommodated in most homes.
And it looks great in any home – sure to attract the attention of your guests and one of the many things for your guests to talk about.
Besides providing entertainment, a baby grand piano is also an elegant looking piece of furniture/decoration.

Lancaster pianist with Asperger syndrome receives baby grand piano after chance meeting at Park City
Gwen Gast had worked tirelessly to find a home for her family’s Cable Nelson baby grand piano. Her grandparents purchased the piano in the 1920s and passed it down to her parents, and when both her mom and dad died, her siblings put her in charge of finding the instrument a new home. Gast didn’t have room for the piano, and neither did her siblings.
“I searched and searched, and I came across all kinds of avenues to find a home for it, but it didn’t feel good in my soul,” Gast says.
That is, until she met Minnig.
Gast first heard 27-year-old Lancaster pianist Brad Minnig playing a piano at the Park City Center, the piano was provided by Music for Everyone’s Keys for the City program.
“I froze, I just stood there and listened, and these weren’t songs that I recognized. These were different, and I could tell they were being generated from him, from his gift,” says Gast.
Brad has Asperger syndrome, a condition on the autism spectrum. Those who have it are generally high functioning, but may have issues with communication and social interaction.
In addition to playing complex classical pieces, Minnig has composed 150 original works.
