Founded by Alan Robert Pearlman (the brand is named after his initials A.R.P) in 1969, ARP Instruments quickly emerged as a serious threat to Moog Music (pioneers of modular synthesis) and eventually went past them as the world’s leading manufacturer of electronic instruments.
ARP was extremely popular in the 1970s for crafting quality analog synthesizers, but unfortunately the company shut down in 1981 due to several bad financial decisions.
Several decades later companies like Behringer are trying to make a budget clone of the legendary ARP 2600; Korg even reissued the company’s classic Odyssey synth which became sort of a standard for synthesizers with it’s duophonic unit, VCOs and sound-creating possibilities.
