These animals love to play musical instruments, including piano, guitar, and more.
Get Your Pets (Cat & Dog) to Peacefully Co-Exist With Your Music
If you’re a musician and have cats/dogs at home (or plan to get one), just don’t expect them to appreciate your musicality right away.
Cats, for instance, have sensitive hearing and high-pitched instruments (such as flute or piccolo) can irritate a few of them. Just because you love your instrument doesn’t mean your cat will feel the same way.
Here are a few solutions if you want your pet to peacefully exist with your musical instruments (when you’re playing/practicing).
- If possible, practice in a separate room and shut the door when you’re practicing (assuming your cat/dog doesn’t enjoy the sound of your musical instrument).
- If the sound is still loud and bothers your pet, you may want to add soundproofing panels to further contain the sound within the room (which even your neighbors will appreciate in all probability).
- If you bring home a new cat/dog, give them time to inspect your musical instruments and to get used to them.
Most of the time, the cat/dog will eventually get used to hearing you practice, but you need to give them some time. You never know, later on, they could get so attached to your instrument that they would actually want to play them, and even go on to become a YouTube sensation.
Top piano playing cats (funny)
Top piano playing cats (funny), including ‘Nora’ (the piano playing cat)
Do you have a pet at home who share the same level of enthusiasm for the piano as you do? If yes, then i’m glad you have some company. Here are some cats who love to play the piano.
Nora the Piano Playing Cat
Nora is the most popular piano playing cat right now. Nora is an American shorthair, and owned by Betsy Alexander and Burnell Yow of Philadelphia. When the couple first noticed Nora’s fascination for the piano, they started filming the cat and posting the videos on YouTube, especially for their niece. The videos went viral and has more than 37 million views. Nora’s online success has led to TV appearances with celebrities such as Conan O’Brien, Ellen DeGeneres and Tyra Banks…
This video features all-new footage and more duets, and is a lot better (better edited) than the original. The cat began sitting at the piano at about one-year-old. She plays several time a times a day for short periods. This is not a trick taught to Nora (in one of the scenes you can actually see the cat looking to the player on the adjacent piano and trying to imitate the player).
She really seems to be putting in the efforts; at least she’s not giving up. And like most of us, she does seem to get a little frustrated on not getting it right ;).

Does your pet has any such talent? May be it’s time to take piano lessons together, and let us know if your pet has any such hobbies.
These Musical Dogs love to sing-along while paw-forming on piano
It seems dogs are good imitators as well; watch these musical dogs sing while playing the piano, trying to mimic their masters.
And they all seem to be quite confident about their capabilities.
Not sure what they are singing? Never mind! After all you know what they say: “music is a universal language”!
Checkout these talented musical dogs.
This musical dog (a spaniel) loves to sing and imitate a piano performer. Watch as it howls while playing on his owner’s piano. The owner says the dog (based in Vaasa, Finland) has been playing since it was a puppy.
Another talented Dog (a Bichon Frise) who knows how to put on a good piano performance!
Sadie, a German Shepherd/Border Collie cross from Edmonton, jumps up onto an piano bench, plays the piano (organ) in a video posted to YouTube. Her owner says that she first taught her to jump up on the bench, then she taught her to turn the organ on with her mouth, and then use the to play the keys of the organ.
Watch another talented beagle – named Buddy Mercury (after his idol, Queen’s Freddie) – who loves playing the instrument. This piano-playing rescue loves nothing more than bashing the keys.
Here’s a Siberian husky who thinks he is a musical genius, watch this dog sings along to the owners piano performance.
You may probably have heard of nora, the cat, playing the piano but how about some puppies?
In case you need a reason to smile today, here is a short clip of adorable puppies playing the piano (technically a toy piano).
It seems, these are English mastiffs (as per The Pet Collective), and they seem to be enjoying the jamming session on the toy piano, and they seem to be quickly getting the hang of it.
I guess had they been provided with more practice sessions, they would have played some more masterpieces.
In case you have never seen a puppy mastiff, you’ll definitely find these adorable.
As the saying goes, you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but you can definitely enjoy seeing these puppies at play, on the piano.
Hen pecks keys on piano to the tune of ‘America the Beautiful’
Bizarre video shows a hen pecking keys on the piano to the tune of ‘America the Beautiful’.
Jogku the 19-month-old chicken was taught to play the piano by her owners.
Sounds difficult to believes?
It seems the owners taught her to play by ‘clicker training,’ which uses positive reinforcement to shape behavior.. Okay, so that makes sense.
It took about two weeks to get her to play this song.
Well, its not that the hen memorized the notes, the keys on the keyboard has a red light and the hen has been trained to pick on it.
The keyboard she plays on is a Yamaha lighted keyboard (probably the EZ-220). It has a feature called song learning where the keys light up when you select a built-in song. It prompts you to play the right keys, thus helping you to learn to play a song.
So the chicken will hit the lit up key. If another key is lit, it will click on that note.
Check out the video; the hen did a decent job (after all you don’t expect a chicken to be as intelligent as a dog).
Piano-pecking chicken impresses on AGT season debut
“America’s Got Talent” found a new hero, a piano-pecking chicken named Jokgu.
NBC’s hit talent show debuted (its newest season) with “Jokgu” the chicken playing a patriotic song.
The chicken, who performs as part of “The Flockstars,” needed a little encouragement from her handler to get going, but once she was comfortable, the crowd and the show’s judges were impressed with her rendition of “America The Beautiful.”
Watch the video
Judges Simon Cowell, Mel B, Heidi Klum, and Howie Mandel appeared skeptical at first, but Jokgu managed to win them over with her performance on the tiny piano.
“One of the most incredible things I’ve seen on one of these shows,” judge Simon Cowell said.
Jokgu has advanced to the next round, so we will see a few more piano-pecking performances from her.
These horses love to play the piano with their wriggly lips
It seems, even horses like to play the electronic keyboard. Here are a couple of videos that show horses playing the keyboard with their lips.
Not sure if they understand what musical notes they are playing, but they surely know that there are high and low octaves (not stuck on just a few keys).
Funnily, at the end of the second video, after having finished playing the keyboard, the horse looks at you, as if it was asking “did I play ok”?
Not sure what song was that, but sounds like jazz to me 🙂
Besides, I’am sure that many of you would be jealous that the horse plays the keyboard better than you 😉
Sullivan county horse loves playing the piano
Deva – blackish thoroughbred (in western Sullivan County) – loves to tinker with the piano. The music this retired racer makes comes straight from his horse’s mouth. Deva’s owner, Marion Kaselle, inspires the horse to get started on the piano by sprinkling a small handful of sweet feed on the keyboard of the upright piano (I’m sure she must be using a hoover later).
After Deva ambles over to the piano, he gently gobbles the pellets from the keyboard (lower, middle and upper registers). He continues playing for several minutes – about the length of a pop song – after the feed is long gone. Deva leans over the keyboard and produces sweet single notes from the black and white keys, with the occasional chords added for dynamics. He starts in that lower register, and glides up the keys, picking out notes with his pink tongue and big, flexible lips.
Kaselle, who plays the piano, knows Deva has talent. Horses are smarter than many people think, and they are “naturally rhythmic. She mentions their gaits – the three-beat canter or four-beat trot.
She also explains that horses like music – something she discovered with Deva’s predecessor, Shadow King. Not only did he seem to enjoy the classical music of radio programs like “Performance Today” that Kaselle played on an old Panasonic boom box in the barn, he seemed to enjoy her playing.
Also Read: Classical music used to keep horses calm before a race.
One day, when she was playing her Steinway 7-foot grand piano in the house next to that barn, Shadow King stopped grazing and trotted over to the window for a closer listen.
“Shadow King, are you listening?” she asked. “And he whinnied,” she said. So she moved an old upright piano to the barn and started playing for him. But Shadow King didn’t play, perhaps because he was more of an aficionado than a performer.
Seven years ago, after Kaselle found Deva at the Pets Alive animal sanctuary, she began playing CDs for him on that old Panasonic boom box. She could tell that he liked Debussy, Chopin and Bach, among others. “But I tried (Bob) Dylan and he didn’t like that,” she said.
Then one day, she sprinkled feed on the Cornish upright piano she’d bought for Shadow King. In 2010, an equine piano star was born.
The 1,200-pound animal may know his talent, but the horse who nuzzles visitors and playfully bites their arms didn’t know his strength. He stuck his head inside the piano and destroyed its inner workings.
So Kaselle bought another piano, a 1921 Shoninger upright, and Deva’s been playing ever since.
