Here’s how to know if your child is ready for Piano Lessons. Here are some behavioral (and physical) signals that will indicate that your child is ready for piano lessons, and you should start looking for a piano teacher for your child.
Behavior Signals
Here are some behavioral signals that will indicate readiness in your child:
- Already has his/her favorite songs and joyously responds to those songs
- Ability to sit at one place for at least 15 minutes
- Is willing to be attentive
- Is able to sing to some extent
- Knows their ABC’s and can sequence the first 7 letters of the alphabet correctly
- Seems fascinated by sounds and/or musical instruments
Physical Signs
Physical signals that indicate your child is ready for piano lessons.
- Child is tall enough to reach the piano keys
- Has developed fine & gross motor skills (able to do activities such as holding a pencil and color properly). It basically means the fingers are strong enough for the piano keys (to play for 15 minutes).
- Able to sit on the bench with reasonably good posture.
Usually, these signals are seen in children who are above 5-6 years of age.
Parental Readiness
And what about your readiness, as parents? Here are the things to ask yourself.
- Are you convinced about the benefits of piano learning for your child?
- Are you convinced that the piano lessons will help increase your child’s academic success (performance and motivation)
- Are you willing to spend time and money on this new commitment?
- Are you ready to devote time to listen to your child perform, and also help him/her practice?
- In case you don’t find a home piano teacher, who’ll drop/transport your child to and from lessons?
- Have you factored in that you’ll need to purchase a keyboard or piano as well?
