Korg Triton Family
Introduction to the korg Triton family, and why some of these still continue to be popular in-spite of being replaced with newer models.
Talk about the Korg Triton, and in spite of being replaced with newer models, musicians would jump at the opportunity to own these keyboards. There are many for who, this still form the basis of their music creation set-up.
History
Korg Triton was a music workstation synthesizer that featured digital sampling and sequencing. All Tritons used Korg’s famed HI Synthesis tone generator. In no time, it became the go-to keyboard among musicians who used it prominently for music videos and live concerts.
It soon became a benchmark of keyboard technology.

The Triton evolved out of the Korg Trinity, the first synth to have a Touchview screen, which is standard on the Triton Extreme and Triton studio, but not the LE, TR or rack.
These are aesthetically and functionally very similar to each other. The Trinity had similar naming conventions with the Triton Classic, with Pro and Pro X being designated to models featuring 76 and 88 keys respectively.
The Triton Rack (now discontinued) had all of its keyboard counterparts’ sonic power, sampling functionality, intuitive operation, and expandability.
It was during the NAMM 2007 show that Korg announced the successor to the Triton: the Korg M3 which is another outstanding board.
Buying Used
If you keep your eyes open, you may be able to land up some crazy deals on these keyboards. I have seen Triton LE’s go for as little as £250 on eBay, which is peanuts, for this beast. But then you should also know how to use it and incorporate in your setup.
There are many pro musicians who use this as the sequencer to quickly come up with some music ideas and as their song sketch-pad.
If buying a used one, its best to buy the Triton Extreme or a triton that is SCSI fitted (for faster loading of samples). The Triton Studio only comes with a 48MB Rom. Compare that to the Triton Extreme which costs less and has a 160 MB Rom. Also, the Triton Extreme has 2 USB ports on it for use as a MIDI interface and for data exchange.
