What is a Sonata?
Sonata is a music composition for one or more solo instruments (but no vocals). It consists of three or four contrasting movements that usually change musical keys.
In a violin sonata, the violin is almost always accompanied by the piano (or any other keyboard instrument); during the Baroque period it used to be accompanied by the figured bass. Read more here.

Mendelssohn Violin Sonata in F Major
Felix Mendelssohn Violin Sonata in F major, composed in 1838 by, remained unpublished during the composers lifetime. In 1953 (long after Mendelssohn’s death), violinist Yehudi Menuhin arranged the sonata for publication.
Russian-American violinist Yevgeny Kutik and pianist Dina Vainshtein performing Mendelssohn’s Violin Sonata in F Major (at Boston’s WGBH Fraser Performance Studio).
Felix Mendelssohn composed three violin sonatas, each based on the F key: two in F major, and one in F minor. The earliest of these three sonatas is the Sonata in F major — composed in 1820 when Mendelssohn was not yet even a teenager. It was only discovered and published in the late 1970s. (It must not, however, be confused with the 1838 Sonata in F major, which came to light when violinist Yehudi Menuhin discovered and edited it).
The Violin Sonata in F major has three movements:
- Allegro
- Andante
- Presto
A typical performance lasts about 15 minutes.
