The best Mendelssohn music for Cello And Piano.
Mendelssohn: Complete Works For Cello And Piano
Mendelssohn wrote some great music for cello, which seemed like the perfect instrument for Mendelssohn’s long-breathed melody and the intimate, slightly melancholic harmonic choices. (his brother Paul was a gifted Cellist, and he wrote most of the chamber music keeping Paul in mind.) Those qualities, and more as well, shine through in this new release by cellist Marcy Rosen, long associated with the Mendelssohn String Quartet, and pianist Lydia Artymiw.
The centerpieces are the composer’s two Sonatas for Cello and Piano that makes for delightful listening. The smaller pieces, including the “Variations concertantes” that opens the album, are equally inviting interesting.
